8 killed in California head-on crash include 7 farmers in van, 1 driver in pick-up: Police
Tragically, a two-vehicle head-on collision in Madera, California, claimed the lives of eight men on Friday, February 23, according to authorities.
The California Highway Patrol reports that nine men were involved in the crash, with one passenger surviving.
Around 6:15 a.m., the driver of a black Chevrolet pickup truck collided with a GMC van carrying eight people after erratic maneuvering on the two-lane highway in Madera, approximately 25 miles northwest of Fresno, police stated. A passenger in the rear of the van survived the collision and was transported to a local hospital, where he is expected to recover from his injuries.

The occupants of the van were farmworkers en route to work at a nearby vineyard, as reported by the Associated Press. The vineyard was approximately five miles from the crash site. The wife of one of the farmers was traveling in another van closely following them, and she witnessed the tragic event, according to a report from Your Central Valley.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances leading to the crash and whether alcohol played a role. "At this point, we don’t know whether alcohol or drugs played a factor," Ruvalcaba stated.
