Controlling Husband Murders Doctor Wife for Celebrating Residency Milestone With Friend for a Night of Drinking.
Shiva Gummi, 33, has been sentenced to 10 to 25 years in prison for the 2023 murder of his wife, Dr. Gwendoline Amsrala. The crime occurred at their Las Vegas home in April 2023, after Amsrala celebrated her first year of residency at UNLV's medical school.
The arrest report reveals that Gummi attacked Amsrala and then repeatedly stabbed himself upon her return from a night out with friends. He called 911, stating he had stabbed himself several times and wanted to die. When asked about his wife, Gummi chillingly replied, "She's dead."
Police arrived at the scene, let in by Gummi's mother-in-law. They forced entry into the locked bedroom and found the couple on a mattress with stab wounds, and a bloody kitchen knife nearby. Amsrala was pronounced dead, and Gummi was rushed to the hospital.
Witnesses, including Amsrala's mother, reported no prior signs of domestic abuse but noted Gummi's anger over his wife's night out. Gummi eventually reached a deal with the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, entering an Alford plea to one count of second-degree murder.
Amsrala, a promising young doctor from UNLV's Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, was mourned by friends, family, and colleagues. She was described as destined for a meaningful career, and tributes highlighted her dedication and infectious smile.
Gummi's sentence, which includes time already served, could see him released in less than ten years. He has also been ordered to pay a fee of $428.
