Bauchi is reeling from a tragic incident that claimed the lives of two young children, 7-year-old Zainab Bashir Muhammad (Hibba) and 5-year-old Ummu Salma Bashir, in a devastating fire at their home in Medina quarters.

According to an eyewitness account shared with our reporter, the incident unfolded around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday when the mother of the deceased children left them locked inside the house to run an errand.

"When we became aware of the situation, some neighbours and I rushed to the house but were unable to open the gate forcefully. Eventually, with the help of carpentry tools, we managed to break down the door," said Khalid Mai Doya, describing the desperate attempts to rescue the children.

Tragically, by the time access was gained, the room where the children were located was already engulfed in flames and thick smoke, making it impossible to save them.

Usman Abdullahi, another eyewitness, expressed disbelief over the mother's decision not to leave the children with nearby neighbours, a practice she usually followed. He mentioned that her husband was not present during the incident.

Bauchi State Fire Service personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene, managing to contain the fire and salvage parts of the house. However, the loss of the two young lives has left the community in mourning, with many questioning the circumstances that led to the tragic outcome.
