One person has tragically lost their life, and over a dozen others sustained injuries following a two-alarm fire that erupted at a Manhattan apartment building on Friday. The blaze, which ignited shortly after 2 p.m., originated on the third floor of a six-story building situated at the junction of West 149th Street and 2 St. Nicholas Pl. in Harlem.

Swiftly, dense black smoke billowed upwards, engulfing the upper levels and rendering the living conditions unbearable for residents. Amid the chaos, some individuals found themselves trapped, resorting to desperate measures such as hanging out windows and onto fire escapes as the fire raged on. Regina Shaw, along with her adult son and two puppies, fortunately managed to escape independently, but others required the valiant efforts of firefighters who executed daring rope rescues.

"People were screaming, I could hear people screaming like they were involved in the fire," recounted Shaw.

In a harrowing display of bravery, FDNY firefighters, captured in NYPD footage, undertook the perilous task of descending down the side of the engulfed high-rise to rescue trapped residents. Chief of Operations John Hodgens explained the intricate procedure, emphasizing the extraordinary nature of having to execute three rope rescues during a single fire incident.

Among the rescuers was Jason Lopez, a probationary firefighter, who, despite having less than a year on the job, demonstrated unwavering courage in the face of danger.

"We always train like the real thing so when the real thing happens, we know what we're doing," Lopez affirmed.

Eyewitness accounts detailed heart-wrenching scenes of individuals clinging precariously before succumbing to the flames. Tragically, the intensity of the fire claimed one life, while leaving 18 others injured, with five in critical condition.

Hodgens attributed the ferocity of the flames to a third-floor apartment door being left ajar, allowing for rapid escalation of the blaze.

"In just a matter of moments all of that just goes up in actual flames," remarked displaced resident Samuel Shaw.

As a precautionary measure, a full vacate order has been imposed on the building, which comprises 31 units, in the aftermath of the devastating incident.
