Florida Cop Arrested for DUI: Bodycam Footage Captures Dramatic Traffic Stop
New bodycam footage reveals the shocking moment Florida cops pulled over an alleged drunk driver, only to discover their colleague behind the wheel.
Miami Gardens police Sgt. Andrea Smith, a 10-year veteran of the department, was stopped on March 14 for suspected DUI and reckless driving. The video, obtained by NBC6 South Florida, shows Smith nodding off and vehemently denying intoxication as her fellow officers arrested her.
“Are you serious, Sergeant, really? You see how you’re driving?” a Miami Gardens officer asked in disbelief upon recognizing Smith as she stepped out of her white Mercedes. Smith had allegedly blown through two red lights and was speeding before being pulled over.
Dressed in a dress and heels, Smith exhibited bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol, according to the police report. She refused a breathalyzer test and was subsequently booked into jail.
“I’m not crazy. I’m sober,” Smith shouted at the arresting officer, warning, “If they can take a sergeant to jail, they can take you to jail.”
In the back of the police cruiser, Smith complained about being treated “like an animal” by her “own people” and threatened to “sue the s–t out of Miami Gardens.” The video also shows her slouching over as she fell asleep. Additionally, she offered financial advice and boasted about her “$130,000” car.
Smith pleaded not guilty to the charges and was relieved of duty by the Miami Gardens Police Department. Her attorney, Mark Lefcourt, asserted that the bodycam footage supports Smith’s claims of sobriety. “The arrest of Sergeant Andrea Smith is nothing short of a travesty of justice,” Lefcourt said. “The videos show that she didn’t have bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, an unsteady gait, or an inability to engage in intelligent communication. Sergeant Smith agreed to perform all sobriety exercises.”
Lefcourt also suggested that Smith’s arrest was an act of retaliation for her role as a whistleblower, though he did not specify the nature of her allegations.
