Kylian Mbappé has formally accused Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) of moral harassment and is demanding €55 million in unpaid wages, according to confirmation from the Paris prosecutor’s office on Thursday.
Now playing for Real Madrid, the French national team captain has initiated legal proceedings against his former club, claiming mistreatment after he refused to extend his contract ahead of the 2023–2024 season. The dispute centers on unpaid financial dues and the controversial decision by PSG to isolate him from the main squad during preseason activities.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Mbappé is denouncing the practice of "lofting" — a term used in French football to describe the act of segregating a player from the senior squad for sporting, disciplinary, or administrative reasons. Mbappé was notably excluded from PSG's preseason tour of Japan and South Korea, forced to train with fringe players, and benched during the opening game of the Ligue 1 season.
The conflict stems from Mbappé’s decision in June 2023 to decline the player option to extend his PSG contract through 2025. Although publicly presented in 2022 with a jersey bearing the number "2025" upon signing a new deal, Mbappé claims the club failed to fulfill promised commitments, including the acquisition of key players. The contract, he asserts, was effectively set to expire in 2024 unless he opted in for an additional year — an option he chose not to activate.
This move placed PSG in a difficult position, facing the possibility of losing their star forward without compensation. The club reportedly preferred to sell him rather than let him leave for free and even entertained a world-record €300 million offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, which Mbappé declined.
Despite initial exclusion and mounting tensions, Mbappé returned to the squad shortly after the season began, following internal discussions. However, the relationship between player and club remained strained. He was booed by some fans at his final home appearance in Parc des Princes before making his high-profile free transfer to Real Madrid, where he joined after scoring a club-record 256 goals during his seven-year stint with PSG.
In April, Mbappé's legal representatives indicated that they would take action against PSG for what they described as workplace harassment, citing the player's exclusion and treatment during his final months at the club.
This latest legal move adds another chapter to a contentious breakup between Mbappé and PSG, a club that once offered him the most lucrative contract in its history and hailed him as a symbol of their future.
