Lion kills Obafemi Awolowo University veterinary worker during feeding
The veterinary technologist overseeing the Zoological Garden at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, tragically lost his life in an encounter with a lion on campus.
The university's management, as stated by its Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, clarified that the incident occurred while Olawuyi was feeding the animals in their enclosure at the garden.
Despite efforts from other staff present, the lion inflicted fatal injuries on Olawuyi before they could intervene.
In a statement, Olanrewaju expressed the deep sorrow felt by the entire university community over the untimely passing of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, who had diligently overseen the Zoological Garden for over a decade.
The university's Vice Chancellor, Prof Simeon Bamire, promptly halted a meeting and personally assessed the situation upon hearing the news. Despite medical efforts, Olawuyi could not be saved.
In response to the tragic event, the lion responsible was euthanized. Despite Olawuyi's years of care for the lions, the same lion ended his life.
The university extended condolences to Olawuyi's family and assured them of support in this difficult time.
Furthermore, Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire ordered a thorough investigation into the incident to ascertain its causes.
