Mum, uncle and grandfather face judge in bizarre 'exorcism' death of 3-year-old
Three individuals are facing court charges for the death of a 3-year-old girl during an alleged 'exorcism' at a rural church in California.
According to Lt. JJ Vallejo, the defendants claimed they believed the child was "possessed by a demon" and attempted to "free" her through a ritual. The family suspected the girl was possessed after seeing something disturbing on her mother's mobile phone.
The ongoing hearing in San Jose aims to determine if Claudia Hernandez, Rene Trigueros Hernandez, and Rene Hernandez Santos – the girl's mother, grandfather, and uncle – should stand trial. They are accused of child abuse resulting in death related to the incident on September 24, 2021, at a small Pentecostal church led by Trigueros Hernandez.
The coroner's report indicated that the child died due to respiratory distress caused by prolonged physical abuse. The police revealed disturbing details of the abuse, including strangulation, force-feeding, and physical pressure resulting in loss of consciousness.
Trigueros Hernandez, before his arrest, mentioned attempting an exorcism on the child. The police suspect that he, along with Hernandez and Hernandez Santos, restrained the girl during the exorcism attempt, leading to her death.
Evidence presented in court includes statements from Vallejo, who interviewed the defendants and detailed the disturbing events, including concerns expressed by Hernandez about potential accusations of intentional harm.
Trigueros Hernandez also mentioned the possibility of the child becoming possessed due to something she saw on her mother's phone.
