Police Arrest 15 Suspects Over Looting Of Abuja Warehouse

Police authorities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have apprehended 15 suspects in connection with the looting of a warehouse in the area.
On Sunday morning, some residents raided a warehouse owned by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Department of Agriculture in the Tasha area of Abuja. Following the incident, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command announced the arrest of 15 individuals linked to the warehouse looting.
In a statement, the FCT Police Command addressed the situation, stating, “The FCT police command is fully informed about the impulsive attack on Agric Department Strategic food store located at Tasha, Abuja, on 2/03/2024 by some irate mobs, which resulted in the vandalism and looting of the warehouse.” They further added, “The Command wishes to state that normalcy has since been restored to the environ and the situation is very much under control, as fifteen (15) suspects were arrested, including two local security guards employed by the warehouse management. Exhibits such as twenty-six (26) bags of maize, five motorcycles, and some vandalized aluminum roofings were recovered from the suspects.”
The looting incident on Sunday coincides with a period of severe economic hardship in Nigeria. Inflation rates have surged to unprecedented levels, reaching 29.90 percent in January, amidst soaring living costs following President Bola Tinubu's announcement of the end to fuel subsidy payments.
President Tinubu's decision to float the naira has exacerbated the situation, prompting protests across various parts of the country. Despite the Federal Government's efforts to alleviate the effects of these reforms through the introduction of palliatives and other measures, the impact remains minimal. Last week, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) staged nationwide protests over the government's failure to meet the union's demands following the removal of fuel subsidies and the ensuing hardships.
President Tinubu, however, is urging patience as his administration's reforms take effect, emphasizing the irreversible nature of these actions.
