Police arrest Abuja ‘chef’ who kidnapped boss’s son, collected N3.9m ransom
Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have apprehended Ulagu Philemon Chukwuma, a 29-year-old chef, for orchestrating the kidnapping of his employer's son, 12-year-old Justin Nwakwo, on February 10, 2024, in Jabi, Abuja.
Philemon, employed as a domestic worker and serving as the family chef for the Nwakwo household, was taken into custody by officers from the Utako Police Divisional Headquarters. They were actively pursuing leads to secure the release of the abducted boy and apprehend all involved parties.
According to a statement released by the FCT Command, investigations conducted by the police uncovered that the primary suspect, Philemon, has confessed to colluding with an accomplice named McDonald Arinze, who is currently evading capture, to execute the abduction.
"The perpetrators had initially coerced the victim's father into paying a ransom of three million, nine hundred thousand naira (₦3,900,000)," the statement reads.
However, law enforcement efforts led to the apprehension of the culprits. The abducted child was safely rescued and reunited with his family, while the ransom money was also recovered.
The Command has emphasized its continued pursuit of the outstanding suspects. Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth Igwe, has reaffirmed his unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety of all residents in the Territory. Additionally, he urged residents to collaborate with the police in vetting their domestic staff, citing the emerging trend of kidnappings involving household employees.
