Nine suspected internet fraudsters, an informant to bandits, and eight other suspected criminals were paraded on Thursday by the Nigerian Police in Zamfara State.

The Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Dalijan, said they arrested the 18 suspects, including two females, during different operations across the state. One of them, Dan-Umaru Abubakar, is believed to have played a key role in abducting female students of the Federal University in Gusau last year.

Concerning Abubakar's arrest, the police boss stated, “We have been investigating and will continue until all suspects are caught, and the students are reunited with their families.”

The suspected internet fraudsters were apprehended based on credible intelligence. Investigation revealed they scammed more than 2,000 people. The suspects were caught with over N2m cash (N2,270,000), several sim cards, and four motorcycles.

Nafisa Sani, suspected of supplying firearms to bandits, allegedly masterminded her friend's abduction when bandits sought her help due to a lack of funds. “She masterminded the abduction of her own friend,” the police commissioner said. “Before then, she had been supplying arms and ammunition to bandits. And whenever they ran out of money, they solicited her assistance, and she offered her best friend to be kidnapped.”

The second female suspect reportedly kidnapped a three-year-old baby and demanded ransom.

CP Dalijan reiterated the police's commitment to flushing out criminals in Zamfara State. To achieve this, they established information boxes across the state for residents to volunteer vital information anonymously.

“All we need from you is information,” he said. “We have introduced information boxes placed at hospitals, schools, and ministries. Just write the information without revealing your phone number or name and put it inside the box.”
