Slain DPO: Gang buried prime suspect in shallow grave - police
The infamous cult leader, Gift Okpara, also known as ‘2Baba,’ met his end in a joint security operation on Monday in Embrass community, Ahaoda West Local Government Area of Rivers State. His decomposing body was confirmed retrieved by the police on Friday.
The notorious Iceland cult leader, wanted for the murder of former Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada Division, Bako Angbashim, in Odiemudie community on September 8, 2023, had been the prime suspect. Angbashim was ambushed, killed, and dismembered by the 2Baba-led gang, who filmed the gruesome act before escaping with his decapitated body.
This prompted an intense pursuit by the police. Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, detailed how the corpse was discovered and exhumed from a shallow grave.
A dramatic scene unfolded as 2Baba’s body was brought to the police headquarters, drawing scores of onlookers. Disu explained the successful operation based on credible information, leading to the recovery of 2Baba's remains in a shallow grave in Ebrass.
The commissioner revealed the gang's attempt to evade capture by moving through Ahoada East until they were cornered in Ebrass forest. After his death, his loyalists performed rituals and buried him, leaving behind a military camouflage as a mark of respect.
Disu expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Air Force for their support, including an aerial strike on 2Baba’s camp that facilitated subsequent police operations. He also thanked the Inspector General of Police and the Rivers State Governor for their support.
Chairman of Ahoada West, Ben Eke, confirmed the identity of the corpse, commending the police for their accomplishment. With 2Baba's demise, there is a sense of relief in the community, with hopes for improved security and prosperity
