A teenager brandished a gun during a confrontation on a crowded Florida beach amid the spring break festivities this week, causing panic as people scattered in different directions on New Smyrna Beach on Thursday.
Witnesses shouted, "He's got a gun!" as chaos ensued, prompting swift action from a deputy from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office who intervened and sternly commanded the suspect to drop the weapon.
"Drop the f—–g gun! Drop the f—–g gun!" the deputy yelled at 16-year-old Felixander Solis-Guzman, captured in bodycam footage as he fled from the officer. The deputy and other law enforcement personnel pursued Guzman through the beach area, urging him to relinquish the firearm, while ensuring the safety of the surrounding spring break crowd.
Guzman eventually waded into knee-deep water, where he paused for several minutes while law enforcement officers, with guns drawn, lined up along the beach. After a tense standoff, Guzman dropped the gun into the water, and officers cautiously approached him, prepared for any further threats.
Upon arrest, Guzman complied with officers' instructions and surrendered without incident. Authorities recovered the gun along with a bag containing small plastic baggies of marijuana, as reported by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Gov. Ron DeSantis has deployed over 140 state troopers and additional resources to South Florida as a preemptive measure against potential spring break-related crimes, aiming to ensure public safety during this heightened period of activity.
