Dearria Radley Cooper, 13, was fatally shot Saturday night in her Nashville home after an unholstered pistol in her mother's handbag went off

A tragic incident in Nashville has resulted in the death of a teenage girl after her mother accidentally shot her while searching for her keys in her purse.

Dearria Radley Cooper, 13, lost her life on Saturday night inside their Edgehill Avenue residence due to an accidental discharge of a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol that her mother, De'Ann Radley, kept in her handbag.

Dearria's mother, De'Ann Radley, told police that she had been searching for her keys when the gun accidentally fired
'Thirteen years and my baby is gone. I want my baby back,' she sobbed in a video uploaded the day after her daughter's death

According to police reports, Radley was digging through her purse when the firearm went off unintentionally. Officers from the Midtown Hills Precinct responded to a 911 call just before 10 pm and administered first aid to the 13-year-old before rushing her to Vanderbilt’s Pediatric Emergency Room, where she succumbed to a single gunshot wound.

In the wake of her daughter's tragic death, Radley took to Facebook to express her grief, sharing heartfelt posts and a tearful video of herself mourning the loss of her beloved daughter.

"I don't wish this for nobody," she sobbed in the video. "Nobody, I wouldn't wish this on nobody. My baby, my baby is gone."

Police responded to a 911 call at 9:58 pm and rendered aid to the teenager before she was taken to the emergency room, where she later died
The middle schooler, nicknamed 'Bug' by her family, died of a single gunshot from a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol

The emotional posts included photos of Radley and Dearria together, with Radley lamenting, "Hug your babies tight because I lost mine, words can't describe this pain."

Dearria's grandmother, Irish Radley, also expressed her devastation on Facebook, asking for prayers for their family during this difficult time and sending a message of love to her granddaughter.

In response to the tragedy, Radley set up a GoFundMe page to cover funeral expenses, as she does not have insurance to bury her daughter.

It is unclear if Radley will face charges in connection to her daughter's death, as no charges have been filed yet

As of now, no charges have been filed in connection to Dearria's death, and the Youth Services Division of the police department is conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.

It's worth noting that in Tennessee, gun buyers are provided with a firearm lock at the time of purchase. However, a new law implemented in November mandates that the Department of Safety must furnish gun owners with locks upon request, regardless of purchase.
