UNIMAID Student Attacks 21-yr-old Lady For Rejecting Love Proposal
A student from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Maiduguri, Saleem Ibrahim, reportedly assaulted a 21-year-old woman, Hauwa Abatcha Ngala, after she rejected his romantic advances.
According to reports, Saleem had persistently pressured Hauwa, a student at the College of Nursing Sciences in Maiduguri, to accept his love proposal, but she consistently declined his advances.
Enraged by her rejection, Saleem physically attacked her with a club, causing her to lose consciousness. Security analyst and counter-intelligence expert, Zagazola Makama, revealed these details in a post on Friday, March 22, 2024, stating that Saleem was apprehended by the police but subsequently released following an order from the Borno State Secretary to the Government, Hon. Bukar Tijjani.
The victim, Hauwa, endured emotional distress as Saleem allegedly threatened her with severe harm if she did not reciprocate his feelings. Despite her clear refusal and attempts to break free from his advances, Saleem continued to harass her, culminating in the violent assault that left Hauwa injured and bleeding.
Although Saleem was initially arrested by the Joint Task Force (JTF) civilian volunteers and later by the police, he was reportedly released without facing legal consequences due to political influence. This prompted Hauwa's relatives to file multiple complaints with law enforcement authorities, seeking justice for the assault.
Jummai Mshelia, the Borno Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), condemned the attack and urged that Saleem be prosecuted to deter similar offenses. She emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents to relevant authorities to combat the prevalence of such crimes and provide support to victims.
Despite ongoing efforts by law enforcement and human rights organizations, including filing complaints and forwarding the case to the Ministry of Justice for review, there has been no update on the progress of the legal proceedings against Saleem.
