A recently retired sergeant of the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) died tragically after being crushed by a recreational vehicle outside his home in Oakland Park, Florida. Authorities identified the victim as 64-year-old Craig Bachan, a respected law enforcement officer who had served nearly three decades with the department.

The fatal incident occurred Wednesday evening near Northwest 36th Court and 18th Avenue. Deputies arrived at the scene to find Bachan trapped beneath the RV. According to investigators, he had been working on the vehicle in preparation for an upcoming summer trip.

His son, Connor Bachan, shared that his father had been excitedly planning a road trip through the western U.S., including destinations like Montana and Idaho. "He literally called me yesterday telling me he’s been driving it around town and trying to prepare for his trip. He was super excited,” Connor said.

The RV reportedly collapsed on Bachan while he was performing maintenance work. A neighbor discovered him under the vehicle and immediately called 911. Despite emergency response efforts, Bachan was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There was nothing really notable that happened — it was just basically an act of God,” Connor said, describing the sudden and unforeseen nature of the accident.

The community is in shock over the sudden loss of a man remembered not just for his professional achievements, but also for his personal dedication to family and service. Neighbors noted Bachan had only recently purchased the RV, eager to enjoy his retirement after 29 years with BSO.

Connor described his father as a mentor, teacher, and unwavering source of support. “He made sure that I knew he loved me. He taught me as much as he could,” he said, adding that Bachan had supported him emotionally and financially through engineering school.

BSO detectives confirmed the incident resulted in a fatality and said no foul play is suspected. However, the exact cause of the RV’s collapse is still under investigation.
