1 dead, 5 injured in New York City subway station shooting
One person was killed, and five others were wounded in a shooting at a subway station in the Bronx on Monday evening, according to police.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. ET, officers responded to 911 calls reporting a shooting at the Mount Eden Avenue station. Upon arrival, they discovered six individuals who had been shot, said NYPD Chief of Transit Michael M. Kemper during a media briefing Monday night.
The victims, four men and two women ranging in age from 14 to 71, were transported to local hospitals. Unfortunately, one of the men, a 34-year-old, succumbed to his injuries at St. Barnabas Hospital, Kemper confirmed.
While the injuries sustained by the other victims were not life-threatening, Kemper stressed that the shooting was not a random act. He stated that the altercation began inside a No. 4 train between two groups.
As the train arrived at the station, an individual brandished a firearm and opened fire, Kemper reported. He condemned the violence, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive action when apprehending the perpetrator.
Some of the individuals injured were involved in the initial altercation, while others were bystanders, Kemper disclosed. Further details about the victims were not provided during the briefing.
At present, no suspect has been identified, officials indicated.
