11-year-old fatally stabbed while trying to protect pregnant mother from attacker
An 11-year-old Chicago boy tragically lost his life while trying to shield his mother during a stabbing attack, officials reported.
On March 13, Crosetti Brand, 37, forcibly entered the home of his ex-girlfriend, who had a restraining order against him, as announced by Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling during a Friday press conference following the arrest. Brand had been released on parole from prison just a day earlier.
The boy's mother, 33, sustained critical injuries in the assault but was able to provide information to detectives while receiving treatment at the hospital in the days following the incident. Fortunately, another son, aged 5, who was also present during the attack, escaped physical harm, according to CPD.
Brand faces nine felony charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and home invasion with a dangerous weapon. The state moved to detain him ahead of his initial court appearance on Friday, and records indicate he remains in custody.
Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx expressed deep sadness over the tragic events, emphasizing that an innocent child lost his life while trying to protect his mother in what should have been the safety of their home.
During the press conference, officials disclosed that the boy was leaving for school when Brand forced his way into the residence. Brand had previously served a 16-year sentence for home invasion and aggravated assault and had a history of threatening the victim, which led to his return to custody for a parole violation in October.
Brand and the woman had been involved in a relationship over 15 years ago, and she had an active restraining order against him. CPD also noted previous convictions for violating restraining orders against Brand.
The woman, who sustained multiple stab wounds and is pregnant, was the target of the attack. Detectives recovered video evidence of Brand fleeing the scene and the knife used during the assault.
Alderperson Andre Vasquez, representing the North Side neighborhood of Edgewater where the incident occurred, shared insights during the press conference. He highlighted the boy's popularity within his school and dance troupe, noting a heartfelt vigil attended by approximately 80 children aged 11 to 14 in the boy's honor.
The dance school the boy attended fondly remembered him as a vibrant and positive presence, describing him as bringing joy and brightness to every room he entered.
