Ashtabula County Medical Center is shown on Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Ashtabula, Ohio. Two women have been accused of driving the body of a deceased 80-year-old man to a bank to withdraw money from his account before dropping his body off at the hospital.

Two Ohio women, Karen Casbohm, 63, and Loreen Bea Feralo, 55, faced charges of gross abuse of a corpse and theft from a person in a protected class after allegedly driving the body of 80-year-old Douglas Layman to a bank for a withdrawal before leaving him at a hospital.

According to Ashtabula Municipal Court records, police were alerted Monday evening about the body being dropped off at Ashtabula County Medical Center without identification. Layman was later identified by one of the women, who contacted the hospital.

The women claimed to have found Layman deceased at their shared home and, with the help of an unnamed third person, drove him to a bank to withdraw money from his account. As per Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell, Layman's body was positioned in a way visible to bank staff during the withdrawal, a practice reportedly allowed by the bank.

Lt. Mike Palinkas revealed that one woman had a long-term relationship with Layman, while the other had been staying there temporarily. They claimed the visit to the bank was for bill payment, but Palinkas noted the lack of a clear motive.

Casbohm was arraigned and held on $5,000 bond, while Feralo's arraignment is scheduled for the following week. It's unclear if they have legal representation, and attempts to reach them were unsuccessful. Further investigation is ongoing, with additional charges possible, and Layman's cause of death is pending autopsy results, which could take up to eight months, according to the coroner’s office.
