The Enugu State Police Command has announced the successful rescue of 28 kidnapped victims and the arrest of 10 suspects in a series of coordinated anti-crime operations across the state. The operations, aimed at eliminating violent criminal elements, were carried out in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch, Forest Guards, and local community members.
Commissioner of Police Mamman Giwa, through the command’s spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the breakthroughs on Tuesday, noting the recovery of firearms, ammunition, vehicles, motorcycles, cash, and other incriminating items during the operations.
In one of the major breakthroughs, operatives from the Umumba Police Division rescued four kidnapped victims — two males and two females — who were abducted along the Umumba-Ndiuno-Aguoba Road in Ezeagu Local Government Area. A swift bush-combing operation led to their safe recovery and the arrest of four male suspects directly linked to the crime. The suspects are currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
In another incident, officers from the 9th Mile Division responded promptly to a distress call involving an attempted abduction. A yet-to-be-identified male suspect, part of a four-man gang that attempted to kidnap a woman, was rescued from a violent mob. The gang reportedly abandoned the victim after she raised an alarm, prompting intervention from nearby residents and law enforcement.
The police further recovered a pump-action shotgun, two live cartridges, and N220,000 allegedly meant as ransom in a separate operation. Authorities confirmed that efforts are underway to apprehend additional fleeing suspects connected to the various criminal activities.
Commissioner Giwa praised the efforts of the police units, partnering security agencies, and community members whose cooperation and vigilance contributed to the success of the operations. He reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to restoring and maintaining peace and security throughout Enugu State.
Residents are urged to continue supporting law enforcement by staying vigilant, reporting suspicious activities, and remaining law-abiding.
