3 charged for leaving infant inside closed Philadelphia daycare
Three former Philadelphia day care workers are facing consequences for leaving a 6-month-old girl asleep inside a closed daycare in February.
Janae Smith, 22, Sydia Thomas-Ishman, 23, and Gabriela Rivas, 35, have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and conspiracy.
Investigators revealed that on Feb. 1, police responded to a call at the New Arisens Day Care on Whittaker Avenue around 5:30 p.m. after the child's parents arrived to pick up their daughter and discovered the facility was closed half an hour earlier than scheduled.
Attempts to contact the daycare via the phone number displayed on the building's front window were unsuccessful. Police eventually reached out to owners of other daycare centers, leading them to the owner and manager of New Arisens.
Day care management encountered difficulty lifting the steel front gate higher than 4-feet, prompting the Philadelphia Fire Department to intervene and cut through the gate to allow police access.
Upon entry, police found the infant asleep in her car seat in a dimly lit corner of the daycare. She was subsequently taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children for a medical assessment.
Cam'ron Banks, the child's father, expressed his dismay, stating, "We were recommended to this day care by a family friend, and my sister worked there in the summertime, so we thought we were in good hands. To come out to this is heartbreaking."
