A couple in Glenville, West Virginia, has been arrested after police discovered their 3-year-old child shivering, crying, and alone on the roof of their home in the rain. Authorities say Sonya Adkins, 25, and Mason Adkins, 29, have each been charged with two counts of child neglect creating risk of serious injury or death, and one count of conspiracy.
Police responded to the home around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday. Upon arrival, officers found the child approximately 12 feet off the ground, visibly distressed, and hunched over from the cold rain. Officers had to force entry into the home, unlocking multiple doors and breaking a window to reach the child and bring them to safety.
Inside the residence, a man was found completely unaware that the toddler was on the roof. As police continued their search, they found a second male child confined to a crib in a room that was locked from the outside. Authorities reported that both children were covered in urine and feces from the waist down. The room also contained feces smeared on the wall, indicating prolonged neglect.
According to the investigation, the children’s parents, Sonya and Mason Adkins, were asleep at the time and admitted they had not checked on their children since 8 p.m. the previous evening. During an interview, the couple revealed they had been awake all night playing video games. Sonya Adkins also allegedly admitted to using marijuana.
The children were taken into protective custody, and both parents were booked into the Central Regional Jail. Their bond has been set at $50,000 each.
