Five individuals were injured early Friday morning in a shooting outside a bar in west Detroit following an altercation over a parking spot, according to police reports.
The incident unfolded outside a blues club and escalated physically before a male suspect departed the scene and later returned armed with a gun, confirmed the Detroit Police Department.
Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald, addressing reporters, remarked, "When he came back, he brought a gun, as most cowards do, and he opened fire on the crowd. Senseless, it's just ridiculous."
The wounded individuals, aged between 33 and 49, were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment and are anticipated to recover from their injuries, Fitzgerald noted.
Detroit police responded to the shooting at 2:45 a.m. in the blues bar's parking lot. Surveillance footage revealed the suspect firing a handgun before fleeing in a dark-colored SUV believed to be a Hyundai, as stated by Fitzgerald during his media briefing on Friday.
Investigations and witness interviews indicate that the shooting stemmed from an argument and physical altercation over a parking space outside the bar, Fitzgerald disclosed. While one victim may have been involved in the initial altercation, the other four were bystanders. The shooter acted alone, and police recovered multiple casings from the parking lot.
Fitzgerald expressed dismay over the situation, stating, "For five people to get shot over a parking spot is silly."
Additionally, it was revealed that the blues club did not possess a permit for extended hours and should not have been operating, according to police findings. Fitzgerald mentioned that authorities intend to look into why the club was open at that time.
"Obviously, this blues club should not have been open at 2:45 where they're arguing for a parking spot," Fitzgerald emphasized.
