A 6-year-old Michigan boy with autism tragically drowned on Saturday, July 26, after wandering away from a family reunion at Belle Isle Park, located near downtown Detroit, according to Michigan State Police.
The child had been playing inside a bounce castle at the park with several other children when he disappeared, investigators said. Family members quickly noticed his absence, began searching the area, and contacted 911 for assistance.
Approximately 30 minutes after the boy went missing, a child and an adult discovered him in the nearby river. Emergency responders immediately attempted lifesaving measures, including CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator, before rushing the boy to Children's Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.
Michigan State Police First Lt. Mike Shaw issued a statement on Sunday, July 27, emphasizing the dangers of drowning. “A drowning can happen quickly and quietly and is often not how it is portrayed on TV,” he said. Shaw added that Michigan has seen multiple drownings this year and urged the public to remain vigilant. “Keep a close eye on your kids and people who can’t swim, wear life jackets when boating, and if you are a poor swimmer, be careful with alcohol consumption.”
The heartbreaking incident has sparked renewed warnings about water safety, particularly for children and vulnerable individuals.
