Nine people were killed in a tragic collision involving a van and a tractor-trailer at an intersection on a Wisconsin state highway.

The crash occurred in Dewhurst Township, about 45 miles southeast of Eau Claire, when an eastbound tractor-trailer struck a van traveling northbound on County Road J.

The driver of the tractor-trailer and eight individuals from the van, including the driver, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Only one person from the van survived the crash and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Governor Tony Evers expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and praised the first responders for their swift action.

The names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Both vehicles sustained severe damage, with the van overturned and the tractor-trailer mangled in a nearby ditch.
