Abia State Police Dismiss Cop for Misuse of Firearm Leading to Death
Police Corporal Obagi Njok has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force by the Abia State Police Command due to discreditable conduct involving the misuse of firearms, which resulted in the death of businessman Emmanuel Okocha. This decision was announced in a statement by the command's Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, involved Njok shooting Okocha at a checkpoint after the businessman allegedly refused to give him money. Following a thorough investigation, Njok was found guilty of misconduct and misuse of a firearm, leading to his dismissal from the force.
The statement emphasized the commitment of the Abia State Police Command to upholding professionalism and the rule of law, condemning any form of misconduct or indiscipline among its officers. The command also mentioned that relevant stakeholders, including the deceased's family, were involved throughout the disciplinary process.
In addition to dismissal, Njok will face criminal prosecution as the matter has been handed over to the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Abia State. The command reiterated its dedication to maintaining professionalism and accountability within the police force.
