Access Holdings CEO, Herbert Wigwe dies in a Helicopter Crash
The CEO of Access Holdings PLC, Herbert Wigwe, has tragically passed away. Reports indicate that he was aboard a helicopter that crashed in California, US.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the crash in collaboration with the National Transportation Safety Board. Mr. Wigwe, his wife, and son along with Chris Ogunbanjo, were aboard a Eurocopter EC 130 helicopter when it crashed near Nipton, California, around 10:00 p.m. on Friday.
The incident occurred approximately 60 miles from Las Vegas, where the passengers were reportedly en route to attend the Super Bowl matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.
Authorities from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office are in the process of identifying the victims.
Mr. Wigwe, aged 57, co-founded Access Bank in 2002 after a tenure at the professional services firm Cooper & Lybrand, now known as PwC. He assumed the role of CEO in 2014, succeeding Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede.
This tragic incident involving Mr. Wigwe occurred amidst a weekend marked by three aviation incidents in the United States. On Friday afternoon, a private jet crash claimed the lives of at least two individuals in Florida, as the aircraft lost both engines and attempted an emergency landing on a highway.
Additionally, the U.S. military confirmed the deaths of five Marines following the crash of a military helicopter in the mountains near San Diego, California. The Marines were engaged in a training exercise when the accident occurred.
Local news sources report that the Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank was among those who died in the San Bernardino County helicopter crash. The Eurocopter EC 130 helicopter, with six people on board, crashed around 10 p.m. local time, east of the 15-Freeway near Nipton, which is just west of the Nevada border.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash and the circumstances, with early reports indicating that no survivors have been located.
Dr. Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe, CEO of Access Bank, had professional ties to Nigeria, serving as a Board Member of Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company and a member of the Advisory Board for Friends Africa.
