Newly released images reveal the dual life of Aimee Betro, 44, who made headlines in a botched assassination plot in Birmingham. Described as an "ordinary American tourist" with a surprising alter ego, Betro's day job was as an administrator for the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team.
Court proceedings unveiled that Betro stands accused of being the alleged hitwoman whose plan went awry when her gun malfunctioned during an attempt on boutique store owner Sikander Ali's life. This contract killing, supposedly orchestrated by Mohammed Aslam, 56, and his son Mohammed Nazir, 30, had Betro posing as a tourist before her true identity was unveiled.
Disguised in a hijab, Betro's initial attempt outside a house in Acocks Green failed due to a jammed gun. Undeterred, she returned in a taxi to fire shots at the property and texted their target's father, Aslat Mahamud, inquiring about their whereabouts.
After the incident, she swiftly flew back to the US, triggering an international manhunt. West Midlands Police continue their efforts to locate her, emphasizing that she's not linked to other attempted hits.
Meanwhile, Nazir and Aslam, from Derby, faced trial for conspiracy to murder, with Nazir also convicted of firearm-related charges and perverting the course of justice.
The trial revealed a backstory of disputes between the defendants and the target, stemming from a jewelry shop incident in 2018. The sequence of events leading to the attempted hit paints a vivid picture of Betro's life on the run.
Despite her ongoing evasion, Betro's involvement underscores the intricate web of conflicts and criminality, highlighting the unexpected realities lurking beneath seemingly ordinary lives.
