Authorities in Northern California have confirmed the recovery of all seven individuals who were reported missing after a massive explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Yolo County last week. The deadly blast triggered a destructive wildfire and rocked the small agricultural community of Encarto, located approximately 40 miles northwest of Sacramento.
The explosion occurred Tuesday and caused a barrage of fireworks to detonate in rapid succession, igniting a major fire that consumed the warehouse and sparked additional spot fires across surrounding farmland. The blast caused the structure to collapse, complicating recovery efforts.
On Sunday, Yolo County officials announced that all human remains had been recovered from the site. The identities of the deceased are being withheld until next of kin are notified. “Crews are continuing to mitigate explosive hazards present at the scene,” the county said in a statement, noting that the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
Two individuals sustained injuries in the blast and received medical treatment. No further information has been released regarding their conditions.
The facility was operated by Devastating Pyrotechnics, a company with more than three decades of experience in fireworks production and event design. The company issued a statement expressing condolences: “Our hearts and thoughts are with those we lost, their families, and everyone impacted in our community. Our focus will remain on those directly impacted by this tragedy, and we will cooperate fully with the proper authorities in their investigation.”
The resulting wildfire scorched nearly 80 acres (33 hectares) of land, burning through agricultural fields and prompting emergency response teams to contain multiple flare-ups throughout the rural area. Investigators continue to assess the scene for potential hazards and to determine what caused the explosion.
