A tragic school shooting in the southern Austrian city of Graz on Tuesday has left at least eight people dead and several others injured, including students and teachers. The incident occurred at BORG Dreierschützengasse, a secondary school in the northwest part of the city.
Austria’s Interior Ministry confirmed multiple fatalities in connection with the shooting. A large-scale police operation was launched in response, with tactical units, emergency services, and a helicopter deployed to the scene.
Authorities stated that the situation was brought under control and there is no ongoing threat to public safety. Law enforcement assured residents in a statement that “the situation is secure” and “no further danger is expected.”
According to police spokesman Fritz Grundnig, gunfire was heard at the school, prompting immediate evacuation of the building. Those injured in the attack were transported to the nearby Helmut List Hall, which was converted into a temporary emergency care center.
Among the injured were both students and faculty members. The exact number of injured individuals has not yet been confirmed. It remains unclear whether the suspected perpetrator is among the wounded or deceased.
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities established a designated meeting point for parents at the ASKÖ football stadium to reunite with their children.
The motive behind the attack remains under investigation, and the identity of the shooter has not been released. Officials continue to gather evidence and speak with witnesses as part of the ongoing inquiry.
