Australian businessman and co-founder of youth fashion retailer Universal Store, Greg Josephson, was fatally stabbed during a house party at his upscale Brisbane home on Thursday night. A 15-year-old boy has been charged with murder in connection to the incident.

The 58-year-old CEO was hosting a gathering of approximately 30 teenagers at his residence in the affluent suburb of Clayfield when the attack occurred around 8:15 p.m., according to Queensland Police. Authorities stated that Josephson and the alleged attacker were known to each other and had a prior relationship before the fatal altercation. The teen is accused of using a household item to stab Josephson during a confrontation.

Emergency services arrived at the three-story, six-bedroom home to find Josephson critically injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The teen suspect was apprehended two blocks away and later charged with murder. He has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Brisbane Children’s Court.

Josephson had purchased the luxury property for $1.25 million in 2016 and undertook significant renovations in 2022 to transform it into what he described as a “five-star home.” The property is now valued at an estimated $3.2 million. He had recently listed the home for sale, expressing plans to relocate with his family to Noosa, where he also had business interests.

“We’re sad to sell but we’re relocating to Noosa where we have a house and business interests. But we’re proud that we went all out to create a once-in-a-lifetime forever home,” Josephson said prior to his death.

Josephson co-founded Universal Store in 1999 with his brother Michael, creating a trend-driven clothing brand targeting young men and women aged 15 to 34. Since stepping down from Universal Store in 2018, he served as CEO of Josephson Holdings Pty Ltd and maintained a relatively low public profile.

In a statement confirming his death, Universal Store honored Josephson’s foundational role in the company and expressed their condolences.

Neighbors expressed disbelief at the tragedy, saying the party had appeared quiet before the stabbing. “It was extremely quiet, I wouldn’t have even known there was a party going on last night,” one neighbor said.

Queensland Police Acting Assistant Commissioner Rhys Wildman commented, “There was some sort of altercation that resulted in this 58-year-old male tragically losing his life. It’s not a case of carrying knives—it’s unfortunately something that occurred within a home.”

The incident comes months after Queensland enacted a new law in September 2024 prohibiting minors from purchasing knives, part of an effort to curb youth violence across the state.
