Jillian Lauren, author and wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was shot and injured by police before being taken into custody on attempted murder charges following a chaotic incident in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Lauren, 51, who gained notoriety for her 2010 memoir Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, was not involved in the initial events that led police to the Eagle Rock neighborhood of East Los Angeles. LAPD officers were pursuing three suspects involved in a misdemeanor hit-and-run who had fled on foot into the residential area after abandoning their vehicle following a freeway crash.

Authorities say Lauren emerged from a neighboring house armed with a handgun and failed to comply with multiple commands to drop the weapon. Officers claim she opened fire after spotting one of the hit-and-run suspects on her property, then pointed her weapon at police, prompting officers to return fire. She was struck in the shoulder.
After being shot, Lauren reportedly went back inside her home, packed an overnight bag, and was later taken to a local hospital where she received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. She was subsequently booked on attempted murder charges and is currently being held on a $1 million bond.

LAPD confirmed that Lauren was not involved in the earlier hit-and-run incident. “The officers ordered Shriner to drop the handgun numerous times. However, she refused. Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers," the department said in a statement. A 9mm handgun was later recovered inside the home.
Of the three suspects in the original chase, one was arrested in a nearby backyard wearing only boxer shorts. Authorities say he tried to evade capture by blending into the neighborhood and even jumped into a swimming pool. The other two suspects remain at large.

Lauren married Shriner in 2005. The couple have two adopted children and two dogs, Peanut and Calvin, who have appeared in animal adoption campaigns. Lauren’s first memoir detailed her years as part of a harem associated with Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei. She followed that with a novel, Pretty (2011), and a second memoir, Everything You Ever Wanted (2015), recounting her and Shriner’s journey adopting a child with special needs.
Her most recent work, Behold the Monster: Facing America’s Most Prolific Serial Killer (2023), was a bestselling true crime book based on interviews with convicted killer Samuel Little and served as the basis for the documentary series Confronting a Serial Killer.
Weezer, with Shriner as its longest-serving bassist since joining in 2001, is scheduled to perform at Coachella on Saturday, April 12.
