A Massachusetts court heard the trial of Jack Callahan, 22, accused of drowning his father Scott, 57, in what he believed to be an 'exorcism' to rid his father of a demon he saw in his eyes.
The incident occurred in June 2021 outside Duxbury, about 30 miles from Boston, where Scott was found floating in a pond by police.
Jack claimed his father was possessed by a demon named 'Dirty Dan' and thought baptism could expel the demon.
According to reports, Jack and his father were returning from a bar in Boston when his mother, Wendy, refused to let Scott into their home. Jack then asked the cab driver to stop by the pond.
Jack confessed to police that he submerged his father's head multiple times in the water, stating he left him there to choose between heaven and hell.
Scott, a Senior Vice President at Texas Capital Bank, had been receiving treatment for alcoholism before heading to the bar in Boston.
The altercation between Jack and his father escalated when Jack asked the Uber driver to stop, leading to Scott allegedly attacking Jack.
Jack's mother noticed his return home in wet clothes around 2 am and called the police about his mental state and Scott's disappearance.
When found by police, Jack was distressed and hyperventilating, mentioning he had blacked out during the incident.
Scott was pronounced dead after CPR attempts at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.
Jack pleaded not guilty at his first hearing and was sent for a mental health evaluation.
His trial for murder is expected to last 10 days.
