A major leadership transition is underway at one of Dallas' largest churches as Bishop T.D. Jakes announced he is stepping down as head pastor of The Potter’s House. During an emotional Sunday service, Jakes revealed that his daughter and son-in-law, Pastors Sarah Jakes Roberts and Toure Roberts, will assume leadership of the congregation starting in July.

The announcement comes just months after Bishop Jakes suffered a massive heart attack while delivering a sermon at the church. Reflecting on his journey, Jakes addressed the congregation with deep gratitude, stating, “You have been faithful to God, and you have been faithful to me. And I’m so grateful.”

Holding back tears, Bishop Jakes expressed his appreciation to his church family before confirming his decision to step aside. His daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, responded with an emotional tribute, saying, “I’m grateful, I’m honored, as your daughter. I’m so happy you’re going to get some rest.”

Founded by Bishop Jakes in 1996, The Potter’s House has grown into one of the most influential megachurches in the United States. Church officials indicated that this leadership transition had been planned for years, but it gained urgency following Jakes' health scare last November. After collapsing during a sermon, Jakes was rushed to the hospital where doctors informed him that arriving even five minutes later could have been fatal.

“I cannot afford, especially after November, to risk something happening to me and you be sheep without a shepherd,” Jakes told the congregation, emphasizing the importance of continuity.

The congregation responded with a mixture of sadness and cautious optimism. Patrick Moore, a church member, shared, “I was sad, it’s hard to replace an icon like Bishop, I mean, it’s just hard to do that. It’s actually impossible to do that, so very sad.” Other members acknowledged that while transitions are difficult, they are hopeful about the future and excited to see how the next generation will lead the church forward.

Despite stepping down as lead pastor, Bishop T.D. Jakes will continue to serve as chairman of The Potter’s House board and act as the church’s spiritual overseer, ensuring continued guidance during this pivotal transition.
