A boat explosion on Lake Lanier in Georgia Friday evening left seven people injured and sent plumes of fire and smoke into the sky as bystanders looked on in shock. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. ET, prompting an emergency response from Hall County Fire Rescue.
Fire crews arrived to find the boat engulfed in 5-foot-high flames, with black smoke billowing from the vessel. Cell phone video captured the dramatic scene as nearby boaters watched from the water, unable to assist as the fire raged.
According to Hall County Fire Rescue, four of the injured individuals were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals, while a fifth was airlifted from the scene. All five were reported to be in stable condition during transport, though the extent of their injuries has not been confirmed.
The fire was eventually extinguished using a portable water pump, with assistance from a Gainesville Fire Department rescue boat. The burned vessel has since been towed to shore. Authorities stated that the cause of the explosion remains under investigation, and details surrounding the circumstances that led to the fire are still unclear.
The incident occurred on the eve of the busy July Fourth holiday weekend, when Lake Lanier typically sees a dramatic increase in boating traffic. Located about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta, Lake Lanier is Georgia’s largest lake, with nearly 700 miles of shoreline. It is one of the most popular recreational bodies of water in the southeastern United States.
In anticipation of holiday crowds, local law enforcement agencies had increased patrols on the lake, with a particular focus on preventing impaired boating. “We have to pay attention to what’s going on around us all the time,” said Sgt. Drew Long of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office earlier in the week. “Even more so because of the dangers that come with not having enough officers.”
Officials continue to investigate the explosion as safety efforts remain heightened throughout the holiday weekend.
