A 20-year-old woman in Brazil was hospitalized after being stung by a scorpion while trying on clothes at a Zara store, and she says she is still suffering intense pain days later.
The victim, Alice Spies, was shopping at a Zara in Guara, Brazil, when she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her leg and became dizzy. Looking down, she spotted a yellow scorpion on her clothes and screamed for help.
Store staff rushed to provide first aid before Spies was taken to a hospital, where she was treated with fluids for five hours before being discharged. Despite medical care, she reported that her leg remains in severe pain.

According to medical experts, scorpion stings typically cause swelling, redness, and significant pain, but they rarely pose a life-threatening risk. In rare cases, venom can affect the nervous system, potentially leading to more serious health complications.
The shopping center where the incident occurred issued a statement emphasizing that it “maintains strict pest control protocols” and prioritizes the safety of shoppers. Zara also released a statement expressing regret and confirmed it is in direct contact with Spies, offering assistance and reviewing preventative measures.
The incident comes just months after another scorpion sting was reported at Boston’s Logan International Airport, where a woman was stung while retrieving her luggage in Terminal E. She was rushed to the hospital in severe pain, though officials did not disclose details about the scorpion species or how it arrived at the airport.

Scorpions are typically found in deserts but are also present in forests of Brazil, British Columbia, and parts of Asia, including the Himalayas. Of the more than 2,000 species worldwide, only 30 to 40 have venom potent enough to be deadly. In the United States, scorpions are most commonly found in Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.
