A 33-year-old bricklayer, identified as Taiwo, has died after a fence he was constructing around a church in the Alapere area of Lagos State collapsed on him.

The fatal incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Saturday while the victim was nearing the completion of his day’s work on the site. According to sources in the community, Taiwo had been contracted by the church to handle the fence construction and was working alone when the structure gave way.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the collapse happened suddenly, trapping Taiwo beneath the rubble. The property owner and nearby Good Samaritans quickly intervened, pulling him from the debris and rushing him to a nearby hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries.

“He was almost done for the day when it happened. They rushed him to the hospital immediately and informed his family. His relatives arrived not long after, but sadly, he was pronounced dead,” a community member said.

A resident who requested anonymity stated that the victim’s relatives later reported the matter to the police. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the deceased’s elder brother made the report at the Alapere Police Division at approximately 8:37 p.m.

“The complainant stated that Taiwo became unconscious after the fence collapsed while he was working,” Hundeyin said. “The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later confirmed dead.”

Following the report, detectives visited both the accident scene and the hospital. Photographs of the site and the deceased were taken, and the body was subsequently deposited in a public morgue for autopsy.

Hundeyin confirmed that an investigation into the cause of the collapse is ongoing.
