At least two people have been confirmed dead and six others seriously injured after an iron bridge collapsed on Sunday in Maharashtra’s Pune district, western India. The tragic incident occurred around 15:30 local time as a large group of people were crossing the bridge over the Indrayani River near the town of Indori, close to Talegaon.
Witnesses reported that the bridge gave way suddenly, sending several people plunging into the river below. Rescue operations were immediately launched, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed to the scene to assist in locating and evacuating survivors from the water and the debris.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that relief and rescue efforts had been intensified. “I was deeply saddened to hear the news of the tragedy that occurred when a bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed in Indori,” Fadnavis said, confirming that authorities were making every effort to recover missing persons and provide medical attention to the injured.
Supriya Sule, a leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), warned that some individuals might have been swept away by the river’s current, complicating the rescue operation.
Eyewitness Raghuveer Shelar recounted the harrowing moment the bridge collapsed. “The bridge suddenly collapsed. At least 20-25 people were swept away,” he said. “Some rescue workers saved a few tourists, and some are feared trapped in the bridge debris.”
Authorities continue to search the river and surrounding areas for more victims, and emergency medical teams are treating the injured. The cause of the collapse remains under investigation.
