A British couple, aged 78 and 58, have tragically died in a high-speed crash after their black Ferrari 488 skidded off a scenic road and plunged into a river in northern Spain. The fatal accident occurred on Saturday in the town of Boca de Huérgano, located in the province of León, during a luxury car rally involving approximately 20 Ferraris.

The couple, whose car bore a UK number plate, were discovered inside the partially submerged vehicle in the Yuso River. Emergency services, including firefighters and the Civil Guard, were called to the scene at approximately 1:47 p.m. after receiving reports that a car had overturned and ended up in the water.

The recovery operation proved difficult, with rescue teams forced to cut through dense vegetation and riverside debris to reach the vehicle. Local authorities confirmed that the extraction of the bodies took more than six hours due to the challenging terrain and the positioning of the car.

Tragic images captured from the scene showed the crushed remains of the luxury supercar resting in the river. The couple had reportedly joined the rally a day earlier when the group arrived in León, in northwest Spain. The convoy had been driving along the N-621 highway, a popular but treacherous route known for its picturesque views and sharp bends.

Medical personnel at the scene confirmed the couple's deaths before the vehicle doors were removed to extract their bodies. It remains unclear whether the victims died on impact or drowned after the car entered the water.

The Spanish Civil Guard described the victims as a middle-aged English man and woman. Authorities are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the accident.

A spokesperson for the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed the couple’s nationality and said, "We are supporting the families of a British man and woman who died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
