British technology tycoon Mike Lynch is among six people missing after a British-flagged luxury superyacht, named Bayesian, sank in bad weather off the coast of Sicily, sources have said.
The Independent understands that Mr. Lynch is among those unaccounted for after the 56-meter (184-foot) sailboat capsized in the early hours of Monday near the Sicilian capital, Palermo. The yacht, carrying 22 foreign tourists, encountered a whirlwind and rough seas around 5 am near the port of Porticello.
Among the missing are four Britons and a child. A man has been confirmed dead, while 15 others, including another child, have been rescued. The yacht had a crew of 10 and 12 passengers, representing British, American, and Canadian nationalities, according to the Italian coast guard.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with a helicopter and rescue boats from various Italian agencies searching the wreckage. A body was seen being pulled from the water on Monday morning, and eight survivors are currently hospitalized.
Prosecutors in Termini Imerese have launched an investigation into the incident.
