An 18-year-old young man from Cowdry Park, Bulawayo, tragically took his own life following a heated dispute with his family over allegations that he had impregnated his cousin.
The deceased, identified as Meluleki Sibanda, was found hanging from a mango tree near his home.
Reports indicate that on the evening of February 21, 2025, around 8 p.m., his father confronted him over the claims, with the family deciding to involve relatives and law enforcement before reaching a resolution. However, by 10 p.m., the family retired for the night, unaware of the tragic turn of events that would follow.
The next morning, at approximately 6 a.m., Meluleki’s father stepped outside and was met with a devastating sight—his son’s lifeless body hanging from a mango tree near their gate. Authorities were immediately alerted, and police arrived to conduct preliminary investigations. His body was later transported to Mpilo Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Some community members believe Meluleki may have been overwhelmed by embarrassment after his secret relationship was exposed.
Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the acting police spokesperson in Bulawayo, confirmed the incident and urged families to handle sensitive issues with care.
“We strongly urge parents and guardians to approach delicate family matters with caution to prevent fear-induced decisions that could lead to such unfortunate incidents,” she said.
