Several people were injured in a dramatic car crash in northwestern Germany on Sunday when a vehicle veered off the road, struck a 7-year-old boy playing on a trampoline, and crashed into the roof of a barn.
According to police, the incident occurred in the town of Bohmte when the vehicle first collided with a parked car, then plowed through a hedge and entered a residential garden. There, it struck the young boy before continuing over uneven ground, which caused the car to be launched into the air. The vehicle ultimately slammed sideways into the roof of a neighboring barn, approximately 3 meters (10 feet) off the ground.
The 7-year-old boy sustained serious injuries in the crash and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Authorities identified the driver as a 42-year-old man, whose name has not been released. He and his wife were both seriously injured. Their two sons, aged 11 and 12, along with a 13-year-old passenger, suffered minor injuries.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene. The operation involved dozens of firefighters, around a dozen ambulances, and two rescue helicopters. Photos from the scene showed emergency crews cutting through the barn roof to reach the vehicle, and the shattered remnants of the trampoline and garden playground the car had destroyed.
The car was eventually removed from the roof using a crane and taken away by police. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
