Catholic Parish Priest Slumps and Dies While Playing Tennis in Awka, Anambra State

The Catholic Diocese of Awka in Anambra State has announced the sudden death of Reverend Father Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, who passed away in the early hours of Monday, May 19, 2025, while playing lawn tennis.
Reverend Father Udogu, who was the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish, Awka, and the Dean of Awka II Deanery, reportedly collapsed during the game and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite swift medical intervention, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Born on December 24, 1964, and ordained a priest on August 19, 1995, Fr. Udogu faithfully served the Church for nearly three decades. His passing has left the clergy, parishioners, and the wider Catholic community in deep mourning.
In an official statement released by the Diocesan Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Charles Ndubisi, the diocese expressed profound sorrow at the unexpected loss. “With faith in the resurrection of the dead, the Catholic Diocese of Awka announces the demise of our brother priest, Rev. Fr. Anthony Nnaemeka Udogu, whose sudden death occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 19,” the statement read.
“He slumped while playing lawn tennis and was quickly rushed to the nearby hospital. All efforts to save his life proved abortive,” it added.
The diocese offered condolences to Fr. Udogu’s family, parishioners, and all who mourn him, assuring that funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
Rev. Fr. Anthony Udogu is remembered for his devoted pastoral service and leadership in the Awka Catholic community.
