New details have emerged in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, revealing that the 31-year-old praised the Mormon faith just moments before he was fatally shot at Utah Valley University. Authorities allege that the shooter, Tyler Robinson, 22, was himself raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Kirk, speaking to a large crowd Wednesday, expressed admiration for Mormons and their values. “I love how Mormons send missionaries around the world, I love how polite they are. … Half my team is Mormon,” Kirk said to cheers from the audience.

He added, “Mormons are great people. Let me just say, I’m an evangelical Christian, but I’m not one of those guys that hates on Mormons.” Footage from Kirk’s final appearance showed him bantering with a Mormon attendee, even joking about wearing “the white shirt and tie,” before reaffirming his respect for the church. Minutes later, Robinson allegedly opened fire, striking Kirk with a fatal shot.

Robinson’s connection to the faith stunned neighbors who recalled his upbringing. “He went to our church when he was younger,” said Kristin Schwiermann, a longtime member of the local community. She described Robinson as “very nice” and “smart,” noting that he once had a full-ride scholarship. “I was shocked that this was even him,” she added.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a statement shortly after the attack, before Robinson’s religious background was publicly identified. “We condemn violence and lawless behavior. We also pray that we may treat one another with greater kindness, compassion and goodness. For members of the Church, we reaffirm the Savior’s teaching and admonition is to love our neighbor,” said spokesman Doug Andersen.

The tragic killing of Kirk, a father of two and co-founder of Turning Point USA, has sparked nationwide outrage and renewed concerns about political violence. Robinson remains in custody, facing charges that could include the death penalty if convicted.
