A woman in Chicago is facing 14 criminal charges, including first-degree murder and multiple counts of aggravated arson, after allegedly stabbing three children and setting their home on fire in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Authorities responded to a 911 call shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Friday reporting a person armed with a knife at a residence. Upon arrival, first responders found the home fully engulfed in flames and discovered three injured children inside.

Four-year-old Jordan Wallace suffered a stab wound to the stomach and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An 11-year-old boy was found with serious stab wounds and is currently receiving treatment. A 13-year-old girl, who authorities believe called 911, sustained stab wounds to the face, back, and chest and is being treated for critical injuries at Stroger Hospital.

The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Wendy Tolbert, is accused of locking the children inside the house, confiscating their cell phones, stabbing them, and then igniting the fire. When officers arrived, the 11-year-old was seen desperately running through the burning home in search of an escape route.

Two adult neighbors suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene, as were three responding police officers. The fire extended to a neighboring property, causing the roof to collapse, authorities confirmed.

Tolbert is facing one count of first-degree murder, six counts of felony aggravated arson, multiple counts of aggravated battery, and additional charges. She was taken to Community First Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation. It is currently unclear whether she remains in medical custody.

Officials have not yet confirmed Tolbert’s relationship to the children, though family members indicated she is a relative. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services stated that there were no prior reports or investigations involving the household.

Authorities have not released a motive for the violent attack and the arson. The investigation is ongoing.
