China has successfully launched three astronauts aboard the Shenzhou 20 spacecraft to replace the current crew on the Tiangong space station, marking another major milestone in the country’s rapidly advancing space program. The mission lifted off as scheduled at 5:17 p.m. local time (0917 GMT) atop the Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, located on the edge of the Gobi Desert in northwestern China. The spacecraft is expected to dock with Tiangong approximately 6.5 hours after liftoff.

The Shenzhou 20 mission, part of China’s steadily growing space ambitions, supports its long-term goals of sending humans to the Moon before 2030 and exploring Mars. The mission will see the arrival of three new astronauts to the space station: mission commander Chen Dong, on his third spaceflight, joined by first-time fliers fighter pilot Chen Zhongrui and engineer Wang Jie. They will replace the existing crew, who have spent 175 days aboard the station since their launch in October last year and are scheduled to return to Earth on April 29 following a short overlap period.

The Tiangong space station, also known as the "Heavenly Palace," represents China’s effort to build an entirely independent orbital outpost following its exclusion from the International Space Station due to U.S. national security concerns. Operated by the China Manned Space Agency under the control of the People’s Liberation Army, the three-module station has been fully operational since October 2022 and can accommodate up to six astronauts during crew handovers.

In addition to regular maintenance and equipment upgrades, the new crew will conduct scientific experiments in medical science and emerging technologies and carry out spacewalks to support ongoing development and innovation in orbit.

China’s growing space capability has raised international attention, especially with the addition of mechanical arms on the Tiangong that some observers believe could potentially be used to interfere with satellites or other spacecraft during a geopolitical crisis. Nonetheless, the country continues to build its space credentials, having already achieved significant milestones, including putting its first astronaut into space in 2003, deploying a rover on the Moon’s far side, and landing an explorer on Mars.

The Shenzhou 20 mission further solidifies China’s position as a major spacefaring nation, advancing its ambitions for deep space exploration and laying the groundwork for future manned missions to the Moon and beyond.
