A 21-year-old congressional intern was fatally shot Monday night in Washington, D.C., when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a group of people, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The intern, Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, was not the intended target.
The shooting occurred at approximately 10:28 p.m. near the intersection of 7th and M Streets NW. Police said suspects exited a vehicle and opened fire on a crowd. Tarpinian-Jachym, along with a 16-year-old boy and a woman, was struck by gunfire. The teenager and woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Tarpinian-Jachym was found unconscious at the scene and later died at the hospital on Tuesday.
Tarpinian-Jachym was serving as an intern in the Washington, D.C. office of Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kan.). A senior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, he was studying finance with a minor in political science.
“I will remember his kind heart and how he always greeted anyone who entered our office with a cheerful smile,” said Rep. Estes. “We are grateful to Eric for his service to Kansas’ 4th District and the country. Please join Susan and me in praying for his family and respecting their privacy during this heartbreaking time.”
Authorities have located the vehicle used in the shooting but have not yet made any arrests. Investigators believe “multiple suspects” were involved in the shooting and are seeking information from the public.
The Metropolitan Police Department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The investigation remains ongoing.
