Cyprus police headquarters have confirmed the authenticity of a viral video showing two police officers engaging in sexual acts in a marked patrol car during daylight hours. The incident, which occurred in Larnaca, has prompted widespread public outrage, official disciplinary action, and criminal investigations.

According to authorities, both officers involved have been identified. One of them was off duty at the time of the incident, while the other was on duty. Both have been suspended from service pending further inquiry. The video, recorded by a local resident, shows the officers engaging in sexual activity in an open public area without apparent concern for being seen.

The Cyprus Police have initiated both criminal and disciplinary investigations. Possible criminal charges under consideration include neglect of duty and performing an indecent act in a public space. “Such actions and behaviours are unacceptable as they insult the work of thousands of our members,” police officials stated.

The footage quickly went viral on social media, causing significant embarrassment for the police force, especially amid ongoing regional tensions in the Middle East, which have placed the Justice Ministry and national security services on high alert.

Those involved have also been identified and have been suspended. One is said to have been off duty at the time. The other was not.

Although the officers were not publicly identifiable in the footage, police authorities are investigating the individual who recorded and disseminated the video to determine whether personal data protection laws were violated. The case has been assigned to the Directorate of Professional Standards and Inspection.

Police spokesperson Kyriaki Lambrianidou expressed concern over the viral dissemination of the video, urging the public to consider the impact on the families involved, especially where minor children may be affected. “The person who filmed could have handed the video over to police rather than post it online,” she said.

The Cyprus Police Association issued a statement supporting the ongoing investigations but appealed for public understanding. “While such behaviours have no place in the police and are condemnable, we must also guard against discrediting the entire force. Most of our officers serve with professionalism and risk their lives daily for public safety.”

The association added that the public’s trust is vital and must be preserved through fairness and accountability. “We call on the public to show composure and allow this case to be thoroughly and justly investigated.”

Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, Irini Loïzidou Nicolaidou, also weighed in, stressing that while the individuals in the video are responsible for their actions, the privacy of their families must be respected. “Any information that directly or indirectly identifies or stigmatizes the families, especially where minor children are involved, should not be made public,” she stated.

Nicolaidou emphasized that the focus of public discourse should remain on accountability rather than sensationalism, adding, “Our society must distinguish between what serves public interest and what harms uninvolved individuals.”
