At least 17 people lost their lives and several others were injured in a devastating fire that broke out early Sunday in a building near the historic Charminar monument in southern Hyderabad, according to local officials. The fire began on the ground floor of a three-story structure that housed a jewelry store, with residential units above.
Authorities reported that 21 people were inside the building when the fire erupted, many of whom were found unconscious and rushed to various hospitals. Tragically, 17 of those individuals succumbed to their injuries.

Federal minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader G Kishan Reddy, speaking at the scene, confirmed the fire was caused by a short circuit. Director General of Telangana Fire Services Y Nagi Reddy explained that the narrow staircase and lack of alternative exits significantly hindered evacuation efforts. With the single exit blocked by the flames, residents were trapped inside as the blaze spread rapidly.
Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control after an intense effort, but by then, the loss of life had already been severe.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, stating he was "deeply anguished by the loss of lives," and announced financial compensation for the victims’ families.
This tragedy highlights ongoing concerns about fire safety in India, where violations of building codes and safety regulations are common, particularly in densely populated urban areas.
