Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a 49-year-old woman who allegedly drugged the mother of a two-month-old baby boy and fled with the child during a business trip. The baby, now five months old, has been safely rescued and reunited with his parents.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, made the disclosure during a briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Asaba, confirming the suspect's arrest and the successful recovery of the child.
According to Abaniwonda, the incident occurred on February 16, 2025, when the 20-year-old mother of the baby embarked on a business trip from Koko to Warri with the suspect, identified only as Mrs. Joy. While en route, Mrs. Joy offered the young mother juice laced with an unknown drug. After consuming it, the woman fell asleep, allowing the suspect to escape with her infant son.
On April 7, 2025, around 10:00 a.m., the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ekpan Police Station received a formal complaint about the incident. Acting swiftly, the DPO launched an intelligence-led investigation, which led to the arrest of the suspect.
“After discreet interrogation, the suspect confessed to drugging the mother and stealing the baby,” said Commissioner Abaniwonda. “Thanks to the efforts of our officers, the child was safely rescued and returned to his parents. The suspect remains in custody, and the investigation is ongoing.”
The Delta State Police Command reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and warned the public to exercise caution when traveling with unfamiliar individuals.
